예천 사도세자태실, 경북 예천군 상리면 나그네의 예천 구석구석 여행 사도세자(장조) 태실 思悼世子(莊祖) 胎室 Placenta Chamber of Crown Prince Sado 태실(胎室)은 왕실에서 자손을 출산하면 태봉 정상에 일정한 의식과 절차를 걸쳐 태(胎)를 봉안하는 곳을 말한다. 이곳은 조선의 왕세자이자 추존왕인 사도세자(장조)(莊祖,1735~1762)의 태(胎)를 봉안하였던 곳으로 정조(正朝) 9년(1785)에 가봉되었다. 일제강점기인 1930년 이왕직 예식과에 의해 사도세자(장조)태실의 태항아리가 서삼릉으로 이장되어 있었으며 2012년 발굴조사에 착수하였고 2013년 암장묘 및 인골에 대한 이장이 이루어졌다. 이후 2014년 4월 정밀지표조사를 통해 사도세자(장조) 대실의 주변에서 확인된 석재를 바탕으로 2016년 10월 보수 복원하였다. 사도세자(장조)대실은 왕으로 등극이나 추존이 이루어지지 않은 세자의 태실을 근거할만한 전례가 없음에도 불구하고 새로 규례를 만들어 가봉한 이례적인 예이며, 아기태실 조성 이후 그 위치에서 가봉까지 이루어진 태실로 아기태실과 가봉태실 연구에 있어서 중요한 자료이다.
The Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) had a tradition of placing the placenta of a newborn prince or princess in a placenta jar (taeho) and storing it in a placenta chamber (taesil) in an elaborate ritual. This particular placenta chamber containing the placenta of Crown Prince Sado (also known by the posthumous title of King Jangjo, 1735-1762) was promot-ed to a royal facility (Gabongtaesil) in 1785. The chamber was moved from its original site to the Seosamneung Royal Tombs in 1930 by the Yi Royal Family Administration (Iwangjik), a government agency established by the Japanese colonial authority. The site of the chamber was excavated in 2012, resulting in the discovery and removal of unlawful burials around the area in the following year. A more systematic survey of the site was carried out in April 2014, which led to the restoration of the chamber in October 2016, using stones discovered around the site. The chamber is re-garded as unique in that the first monument set up as an Agitaesil, literally meaning a "Baby Placenta Chamber," was promoted to a kingly monument called a Gabongtaesil, i.e. an "Invested Placenta Chamber," although the prince had never actually been crowned.
